What’s a “Typical” Day at Nexus?

The only “typical” thing about a day at Nexus Academy is that it’s tailored to each learner’s personalized learning needs.

On-campus classes are held Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The day begins with an advisory period dedicated to collaborative activities and college skill-building work with Success Coaches. Learners then attend small-group classes with their English and math teachers, who focus on each learner’s needs in mastering the curriculum.

Learners also spend approximately 14 hours a week completing online lessons. When students are not engaged with their face-to-face teachers, they complete their online course work and LiveLesson® virtual classes in comfortable, open-seating team zones. They work under the guidance of their Success Coaches, who also meet with them one-on-one to discuss their goals and progress and help them with any challenges in their personalized learning plans.

Learning Tailored to Each Student

We have found that blended learning students are most successful when their studies meet their personal goals, interests, and abilities, so we create individualized education plans to match.

We carefully evaluate each new learner’s strengths, needs, and goals to develop a personalized learning plan that works best for them. As they begin working in our rich, digital curriculum and blended learning models, our teachers and Success Coaches carefully monitor daily data about learners’ performance and adjust the learning program to meet their needs.

For example, blended learning students are dynamically grouped for classroom instruction— both on campus and online – based on their performance in the curriculum. New groups are formed every week or two to focus on particular skills and concepts. Learners who are struggling in math or English may meet daily with their teachers and may even report to campus during their normal “off-campus hours” to catch up, while students who are on track earn greater flexibility in their classroom scheduling.

Meanwhile, true to their titles, Success Coaches use data to create personalized learning action plans, helping our learner set ongoing goals and make needed improvements. They also work closely with teachers, learners, and parents to communicate action plan items, track progress, and assist with assignments. It’s a holistic, educational approach with individualized education plans that make learning more successful for instructors and, most important, supports students and rewards their hard work.
